Carpentry Tools And What They Do

The art of wood working and carpentry have been around for centuries. Although similar to each other, carpentry requires its more specialized carpentry tools, often larger and more dangerous. Those aspiring to become carpenters must be taught how to use these devices, or else risk injury. Carpenters create buildings using wood and other materials, which often requires work outdoors.

The most basic tool of carpentering is nails. Nails are commonly known pieces of metal used to hold groups or beams of wood together. Nails can be set, which refers to the process of sanding and puttying the nail head to create a smoother surface. Hammers are used to drive nails into the wood, and usually have a forked end for pulling them out of the wood again. Screw drivers are another method of installing nails in a surface.

An electric drill is commonly used among professionals. A bit-and-brace is a kind of electric drill preferred by some carpenters who make cabinets. There are a variety of tools used to saw and cut wood as well. A rip saw is used to cut along the grain of wood. When going against the grain, a cross-cut saw is used instead. There is another kind of saw called a coping saw, which makes a couping cut in mouldings.

A rasp is a very rough, tough file used for cutting down wood, similar to a saw. Chalk lines are used to tell carpenters where to cut or frame. They will also use a convenient tool called a combination square to mark forty-five degree angles and measure depths. This a very commonly used tool that is also used to set power blade saw heights.

A block plane is a useful piece for shaving off a small amount of excess thickness on an area of wood, or for just smoothing down a section. Framing squares are simply square shaped frames with straight edges used to make straight lines for cutting wood. Most professionals in the industry also carry with them something called a carpenter’s rule – this is a unique kind of ruler that folds, but is only around six inches.

Utility knives are knives specially used in carpentry for cutting along lines made by, say, a line from a carpenter’s rule. No matter what needs to be done, carpenters have many carpentry tools at their disposal. No tool goes without a vital function – like the many paintbrushes an artist requires, a carpenter needs his own array.

Low cost tools which can be made and repaired by carpenters using locally available materials make it possible for artisans to practice their trade without buying or replacing expensive imported equipment. The tool designs described deliberately reduce the metal component so that the tools can be made more easily by carpenters with no metalworking expertise.

Squares, gauges, clamps and planes are among the tools whose construction is described and illustrated in detail in this book; tools which are equally suitable for use in large training institutions or in smaller workshops. There is useful guidance on maintenance and repair.

This edition includes further modifications and improvements, additional repair techniques, as well as new tool designs. This is an invaluable addition to any workshop.
