Carving wood is the art of creating figures or figurines, using various different tools and methods. Woodworking came about in the midst of the middle ages, more specifically, from France and Italy. At that time, most pieces were about religion, mostly Christianity. A lot of it was iconography, focusing on important individuals to the religion such as God and Jesus Christ.
Each carver has a multitude of tools at his or her disposal. Of these, the most vital is the carving knife, used to smooth, pare, and cut the wood. A gouge is a curved tool with a sharp edge used to create large curves when carving, rounding an area of material, or a hollow indented into the material. A coping saw is used to remove large chunks of unwanted material from the work in progress. The chisel tool can be big or tiny, and is the most commonly recognized among laypersons.

It has a sharp end used to make lines or peel away excess material to make a flat surface on any particular area the artist may desire. There is a V-tool used for parting material, and in some rare cases, for making a unique form of line in the material. A veiner has a special u-shaped cutting edge used for a different kind of gouging. There are many other forms of cutting equipment, but these are the most common. Many other forms of sharpening knives also come into the creating process as well.
Once a worker has all the necessary tools needed to create a work of art, he or she must then begin the process of selecting the proper type of material to work with. The type of material used greatly affects what the worker will be able to create from it. The most popular forms of material used to make figures and other art are basswood and topelo. Other usable materials include American walnut, teak, oak, mahogany, butternut, and chestnut. However, for precise pieces, box, maple, plum, pear, sycamore, and apple are the preferred choices of many.
One important factor that all successful artists have to note, is which direction the grain of the wood is going. This determines which direction the wood is the strongest. Grain can be interlocked, fiddle-backed, wavy, straight, or others. When working on a piece, the artist needs to take note of this in order to make sure the fine details of the work are being carved in the right direction. This is because long, leafy tendrils that go across the grain instead of against it, have a tendency to break off. This is especially true of bird beaks. Carving wood is not so hard when these rules are followed properly.
