Examples of Old Woodworking Machines

Old woodworking machines provide great insights into the evolution of machinery. Since ancient times, artisans and engineers have been developing tools designed to assist in the creation of weapons, furniture, canoes, dishware, wagons and houses.

An old lathe

The lathe is a venerable tool which dates back to ancient Egypt. This machine rotates a piece of wood while it is being carved, shaped, sanded and drilled. This specific type of activity is known as wood-turning. The two-person lathe was developed by Egyptians in 1300 B. C. While one worker turned the piece of wood with a rope, another worker used a sharp object to perform cutting and shaping tasks. The Romans later modified the lathe by adding a turning bow. During the Middle Ages, engineers made further modifications to the lathe by adding a pedal. The foot pedal replaced hand-spinning techniques, which freed-up both hands of the woodworker. The lathe is unique because the wood that is being worked is in motion, while the tools which perform the shaping and cutting are stationary.

Another example of old woodworking machines is the biscuit joiner. Developed in Switzerland in 1959, this tool is used to join two pieces of wood. Its small circular blade cuts crescent holes into two wooden pieces. These holes are called mouths, and are carved into opposing ends of the wood which is to be joined. Once the mouths have been cut, a flat wooden disk (called a biscuit) is fitted to the openings. Then, the biscuit is covered with glue and pounded into the mouths. The wooden pieces are then clamped together. The biscuit absorbs the glue, which helps it expand and secures it into place.

Drills also date back to ancient times. The earliest forms were bow drills, which were developed by the ancient Egyptians. Many centuries ago, engineers modified the design of the bow drill and developed drill presses. This machine involves a fixed drill which is mounted on a stand or work-bench. Its drill head spins, and is then lowered into clamped, stationary wooden pieces. This action is very effective and requires little exertion from the woodworker. The drill press has been powered by various sources throughout history, including human exertion, water-wheels and wind-mills. In the late 19th Century, the introduction of the electric motor led to the development of electric drill presses.

Old woodworking machines have long and interesting histories. These types of machinery continue to be effective tools which are used in the creation of many useful, beautiful objects. Their designs continue to be modified and improved today.

The JWBS-14CS owes its robust performance to a 1 HP engine that moves the blade at a speedy 3,000 strokes per minute for fast, efficient results. And thanks to the included 3/8-inch, 6.0 TPI woodworking blade, you can start cutting right out of the box.

Safe, User-Friendly Design
