On the workbench, a planing stop (also called a dog ear) is a basic component that has been used throughout history for holding projects in place. It involves a wooden or metal peg which rises above the bench’s surface near the end. This peg can be adjusted to accommodate components of varying size, fixed in-place, or removable. The crafts-person pushes a wooden section against the peg, and the wood is held in place as the worker applies force toward the planing stop.
Another historic workbench element is the hold-fast. Shaped like a shepherd’s hook, its shank is inserted through a hole in the top of the workbench. The tip of the hook can then be pushed into a piece of wood from the top. The hold-fast can be set in place by tapping its top with a mallet. It can be released by tapping its backside. The hold-fast is inexpensive, effective, and can be installed with ease.
The vise is another woodworking tool which has been widely used in woodshops throughout history. It is another inexpensive and effective method used for holding wood in place. There are two types found on the workbench, the frontend (face or shoulder vise) and rearend (tail vise) models. The end vise is usually mounted on the bench’s rightside to accommodate righthanded workers. The front vise is commonly mounted on the bench’s leftside to accommodate lefthanded workers.
Another useful piece of equipment is the plane, which is used for planing (flattening) wooden pieces. It functions by shaving off thin pieces of wood to produce flattened, thinner, smoother wooden pieces. The plane can create inclined, horizontal or vertical flat surfaces on large wooden segments.

The drill is another common element of the workshop. They are available in powered or manual models. The jig saw is another useful piece of equipment. It is a power tool which can create circular cuts in pieces of wood. The cuts are created by moving pieces of wood against a blade that is moving rapidly up and down.
The woodshop is stocked with many useful components. Throughout history, woodworkers have been devising effective pieces of equipment, and many remain in use today. Various forms of the woodworking tool continue to function as essential elements of all woodshops.
